Upper Amazon Creek
b) Guidelines for Tree and Shrub Plantings
Notes
• Plan for a 400' section
• Plants not planted in clusters should be planted along the whole section in an even
spacing.
• If a species is included in more than one planting zone, a single cluster across both zones
can be displayed.
• To allow adequate conveyance, NO plants should be near bridges. Leave a distance of
approximately one bridge width on either side of each bridge unplanted. Leave 20 feet
implanted centering on each outfall.
• Black cottonwood should not be planted near structures, facilities, or gathering places,
because older trees have a tendency to shed branches and frequently fail. Similarly, as
trees mature they may need to be removed in areas where they put humans at risk.
However, in some areas, it is desirable to maintain a younger, vigorous stand of
cottonwoods and standing snags, that pose little risk to humans, to serve as habitat trees.
• There are two Oregon ash forests along this stretch. These areas will have `fingers' of
Oregon ash planted to connect them with the creek, while maintaining visual access to
the jogging trail for safety purposes.
15
Plants
Total
Number
Plants
Planting
Latin Name
Common Name
Qty
of Plants
spacing
Zone
Both
per
within
Banks
Clusters
Clusters
... -- - -- - -..__............_........ ...............................
.....-
A lnus ru bra
_... -_ ... -.. - ._....
Red alder
-. .._........_.............................................._-._.__
4
-
.... _ ..............
........ .....- -
3
- _......_ ........................................................................... ......._.......................
Fraxinus latifo
_ ---------- ...... - - - -- ......
Oregon ash
.
60
..._... ........................_..
4 -6
- - -- - ................._......_
10' -15'
1&2
Pinusp
Ponderosa pine
4
........
H
.................... ...............................
Populus balsamifera ssp.
_.......... ....................._- ...._... -
Black cottonwood
12
.......
4 -6
.- - -- - -- ---- .................
10' -15'
. ....................... __ .... ..
2
tricho.
._ .....
Quercus garryana _ _
...... --........................ .............................. __.._...._.__...._..
Oregon whi oak
------ ........ -
8
- - ....__ ...... -- .............
-
. ............. -- ._.._ .............
-
........_.. .......
1
Salix lucida ss . lasiandra
Pacific willow
20
-
-
2
Amelachier alnifolia
Western
.... .__-- ..._.. _ .........................
serviceberry ................. -- . ....... _. ..........
6
. .......................... .._
--- ........ --- ..................... ..............._.
........... _. ......... _..--
1
Berbe aq uifolium
1&2
Crataegus douglasii
.... .. ...I.....
Black hawthorn
__.- ..__._
15
..........
2 -4
.. ......... ........................_
- - - - -- -
2
_ ... ...................____-- __ - - --
Physocarpus capi - _
........... .__..__........._______....._..
Ninebark
__ ..
12
2
_- __..__............7.._.
_.._........_
___ - -.._ -
1.
Rosa noot kana
Nootka rose
12
5 -10
5'
1 & 2
Sal hoo kerian a
Hooker's wil
.....—
30
-- - - - - --
------ . .......................
Sali sitc
Sitka willow
S horic us albus
Snowberry
.....
60
5 -10
............._............. - -_ ....
5 _
... ...............................
..
1& 2
Total
1 299
15
