JONES Angel L
From: Lance Deal [lanced ©uoregon.edu]
Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 12:36 PM OA`
To: JONES Angel L
Subject: Alton Baker Park Hammer Area
Dear Ms. Jones,
My name is Lance Deal. I am an assistant track coach at the University of Oregon.
Michael Reilly has asked me to contact you regarding the hammer throw area in East Alton
Baker Park and the possibility of leaving this facility open at least through the Olympic
Trails.
Please allow me to give you a bit of information and history about the area. The cage and
field are visible from the Autzen Stadium Club Room as it sits just on the other side of
the closed section of Day Island Road that runs through the park. It is about 100 feet
southwest of the walking path that leads from campus to Autzen as you emerge from the
trees on the way to Autzen.
This area was originally owned by Lane County. The county allowed two concrete slabs to
be poured and a protective cage erected at the site as a training area for the community
of throwers that lived and trained in Eugene at the time. This was in approximately 1985.
I trained there for all of my 18 years of my Olympic career as did numerous other national
and international level throwers. The area also has been used consistently by the masters
track and field community since its construction.
After the land was transferred to City of Eugene control, in 1994 (I
think) I met with the East Alton Baker Park planning commission about continued use of
this area. They graciously agreed to allow us to train there until 2004. As that date
came and went, I had retired from throwing and the area has seen limited use since. This
area is the best training site for the hammer in the Eugene /Springfield area.
Ms. Jones, the reason I am writing to you is The Olympic Trials LOC would love to be able
to use it as the official hammer throw training site for the Trials. I am asking you if
there is a way to reinstate this area as a viable place to throw. Can you help me with
this?
Please let me know if I can add any more information or help you in anyway.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Lance Deal 'r hack K: c. \arcrt S r+
Assistant Track and Field Coach
University of Oregon
541 - 520 -7721 IUC1( (Cln, c`ri.
