Ms. Gershow reported that there will be a dedication for the kiosk for Wayne Hill who had been the first
chair of the CPC and the Chair of the Willamalane Board of Directors for three terms. She said the event
would take place Tuesday, July 19 at 4 pm. She added that refreshments would be served.
Ms. Gershow reported that Ms. French was leaving her position and recruiting would be taking place to
try to fill her position.
Ms. French distributed the draft Restoration and Monitoring Plan for Eastgate Woodlands of the
Whilamut Natural Area. She said the plan was nearing completion but was only a portion of the work she
had achieved while working as the Americorps Representative for Willamlane. She noted that more work
was needed but stressed that good progress had been made. She said the goal was to do root removal of
the blackberries and ivy in Eastgate Woodlands. She said much of the removal work had been done by
workers from the Northwest Youth Corps.
Reporting on specific activities, Ms. French said volunteers and Youth Corps workers had removed
65,000 square feet of blackberry ground cover of which 35,000 square feet had also had roots grubbed
out. She added that ivy had been girdled on 750 trees as well as getting rid of the seed source for that ivy.
She said Youth Corp workers had returned in the previous month and removed blackberry roots for an
additional 25,000 square feet of land. She noted that there was some Holly and Herb Robert that needed
to be removed.
Ms. French said the plan was limited to the wooded portion of Eastgate Woodlands. She said a summary
version of the report would be produced at a later date. She noted that the plan needed to satisfy a number
of variable requirements other than the restoration work such as budgetary constraints. She said copies
would be provided to all who were interested so people could submit comments before the plan went
through its final approval process. She noted that the appendices contained lists of invasive species found
in the woodlands as well as habitat for animal species living in the area.
Ms. French said there would be more writing in the document regarding environmental education for the
community. She expressed her desire for East Gate Woodlands to be an area where environmental
education took place. She noted that there were day camp programs doing projects in the area.
Ms. French said comments from members needed to be submitted by the end of July so they could be
incorporated in the final document. She suggested that the CPC put all of their comments together as a
group and submit them together. She expressed her willingness to have private meetings to garner input
from those who were interested.
In response to a question from Ms. Ullmann regarding whether the plan should be an ongoing project,
Ms. French said she thought of it as a 30 year plan. She stressed the importance of getting invasive
species under control before planting native species and also having an established follow -up plan.
B. City of Eugene
Ms. Weiss noted that Ms. French has also done a management plan for the Eugene side of the area that
was nearing completion. She said some of the finishing touches were along the riparian area of the river.
MINUTES Whilamut Natural Area CPC Meeting July 14, 2005 Page 2
