MEDLIN Johnny R
From: ETTER John F
To: WEBER John J; MEDLIN Johnny R
Subject: FW: Donation to the City of Eugene
Date: Tuesday, January 03, 1995 9:OOAM
Here are more details on the donation I mentioned to you earlier. - -John
From: JOHNSON Jim R
To: ANDERSEN Chris F
Cc: ETTER John F
Subject: Donation to the City of Eugene
Date: Friday, December 23, 1994 10:42AM
Chris:
An anonymous donor has given the City $100,000 to establish what will be called he Hays Memorial Trust.
The purpose of the trust is to construct a Memorial Tree Garden in Alton Baker Park. A tree garden
concept is specifically shown on the Alton Baker Park plan diagram. I've mentioned the project and
donation to John, but your schedule and mine haven't matched for us to discuss it. The attached
document goes into some detail about the vision the donor has for the project. Essentially, the donor
wants to establish a place where community residents can have trees planted and purchase other
improvements in the Tree Garden to remember, honor, and memorialize family members who have died.
The donor is not expecting quick implementation of the project; rather, were expected to plan for the next
two years and then implement thereafter.
The awkward part of the plan is that the donor wants my continued involvement in the project. I've
worked with Warren and he suggested we simply establish a sub - account within the Parks and Recreation
Trust fund in LRCS and that I authorize spending within the LRCS budget. I would expect that LRCS can
run the program envisioned by the donor within the park, but that Public Parks must be involved in the
planning, construction, and maintenance of the project. The Trust has two parts -- $70,000 can be spent
for planning and construction, and we can spend the interest on the remaining $30,000 for maintenance
into the future. As community members buy approved trees or other approved improvements, a portion of
their donation would go into the maintenance fund and it would grow with the trees.
When you get a chance, give me a call so we can discuss. < <File Attachment: HAYS.1 > >
Jim
Page 1
