The staff member answering the phone asked if I intended to send a letter. She
went on to say that if I did it would be a waste of time as the Director would either put it
in the large pile of papers on his desk, where it would be ignored, or give it to support
staff to deal with. She said I should tell her, she would probably end up with it anyway.
I declined, and it is that phone call that ultimately led me to write this letter. 1 want
nothing further to do with the Public Works Department in this matter and ask that my
money be returned for the bench.
Lastly, I donated an additional sum of $750 in June of 2002 for second tree and plaque. I
noted that the tree did not look healthy when it was planted and I pointed this out in my
letter of June 17, 2002. On a recent visit, I discovered the tree to be dead and reported it
to the Public Works Department. Clearly there was not a qualified hand selection of this
tree. In a letter from the Public Works Department, the following remarks are made
about the Hays Memorial Tree Garden: "In keeping with the wishes of the original donor,
and the City's objective to maintain this tree garden in a healthy and beautiful condition,
each donation will contain a 30% contribution to the tree garden's maintenance trust
fund." I wonder how long the dead tree will remain in the park.
To summarize, I would like a refund from the City of Eugene as follows:
Garden Viewing Bench $1400
Crab Apple Tree $ 750
Total $2150
Thank you for your assistance in resolving this matter.
Sincerely,
(Y4141,_)/1/10/1/.4-- . -
Lorne Graves
1483 Escalante St.
Eugene, OR 97404
}
