May 10, 2006
The Honorable Kitty Piercy
Mayor, City of Eugene
777 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401
Re: Alton Baker Park
Dear Mayor Piercy:
The NIKE running and college apparel groups recently created apparel collections
honoring Steve Prefontaine and his history. Obviously, the Prefontaine story cannot be
adequately told without some geographic reference to the scenic City of Eugene. The
collections include men's and women's tops containing a map of Alton Baker Park derived
from Pre's running journal (and /or a name reference to Alton Baker Park). Enclosed please
find representative line art depicting the designs.
Therefore, NIKE seeks permission from the City of Eugene to incorporate in its
designs the name and image of Alton Baker Park on apparel and headwear, and to
manufacture, market, and sell said products.
As you are well aware, NIKE makes numerous community investments directly in
Eugene and also through our relationship with the University of Oregon.
We would appreciate if you or the appropriate municipal official would please
indicate the grant of your permission by signing the enclosed acknowledgment form. You
may fax the signed acknowledgement /permission form to me at 503.532.6709. If you have
any questions, please feel free to call me at 503.671.6831 or send an email to the address
below.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this request.
Regards,
B. laine ock
Licensed RDB&D, NIKE USA, Inc.
Elaine.Nock@Nike.com
Enclosures
cc: Sarah Medary, Parks and Open Spaces
NIKE USA, INC.
