My understanding was that he would look at a design for the
east "end" of the street that would keep options open for extending it eventually to the east. I told him
that if there was not going to be enough funding I thought it was reasonable to try to go with a western
section only. Guess I thought there would be some additional review of this with Trans. and Eng. divisions
though, before considering it final.
From: LYLE Les A
To: HAMMITT Bob; ANDERSEN Chris F; LANKSTON Jeff; REINHARD Dave N
Subject: FW: Babe Ruth Street
Date: Thursday, January 29, 1998 2:58PM
Priority: High
Not sure how John felt it was appropriate to take on the responsibility for stateing his view only and not
that of the department with respect to the street configuration. Its my understanding that there was
consensus regarding the through street concept that John participated in. I personally have not been
involved and don't really have a major concern one way or the other but am more concerned that John is
taking it upon himself to apparently only further his agenda. Is this true ?? Thanks Les L
From: JONES Eric R
To: LYLE Les A; LANKSTON Jeff
Subject: FW: Babe Ruth Street
Date: Thursday, January 29, 1998 10:21 AM
FYI. (Freehand because I did not want to reflect that other
aspects of the park were a done deal as we consider the baseball facility and street to be.) It shows a
street of about 600 feet in length which should come in around $180,000 - 200,000.
I am still puzzled about the extra funding that I hear is resulting from cost estimates for the street work
assessible to the school to which, I gather, the County committed $500,000. If the estimated savings
hold up through the bidding, then there would be enough to cover the park street without having to go
back to the other commissioners for more.
From the parks planning perspective, we would prefer to have the street NOT continue through the park. It
would serve to bisect the park with more traffic, faster traffic than would move through parking areas, and
take up space that we purchased for recreational purposes. The plan I have done could be later modified
to finish the street, if it be the will of some other body to push it through. Ted Norman also expressed a
strong preference to have a design to minimize traffic. He is happy with the access, and the plan in
general.
Eric Jones and Carrie Matsushita have been preparing an announcement for the February 6 media event.
The announcement describes the 4 -way partnership of School District 52, County, City and Babe Ruth.
The County component is help with the street funding. We won't be specific about the amount, or
describe how it was allocated, although by the time the media are allowed to ask questions, we need to
have an answer ready. It would be very helpful to have your assurance that either the balance of the
allocation to Dist 52, or the additional request you would make of the other commissioners "is in the bag"
before the invitations are mailed. Hope you can get back to us today. - -John
Page 1
