He has been working diligently to involve many
people attempting to come to consensus on the street and parking lot design. Included in these
discussions have been Ted Norman from Babe Ruth, Bud DeSantis and Jeff Lankston from Engineering,
Gary McNeel and Dave Reinhard from Transportation, and Steve Cornacchia from Lane County. At least
four different alternatives have been processed. From the Parks Planning and Babe Ruth perspective, the
desire is not to have a through street in the central part of a school /park /recreation complex. From the
Transportation perspective, the desire is for a through street. Steve Cornacchia's perspective is a desirable
design that is affordable.
The through street concept designs are generally estimated at approximately $400,000. Steve was
definitely concerned about the ability to fund that amount of money. Apparently the County has
committed up to $500,000 to the school project. John believes the current estimate coming from Bud
DeSantis for that project is now about $256,000. From Steve's perspective, it would be a much easier
task to get the Commissioners to approve the difference being committed to the Babe Ruth street than
asking for money above the $500,000.
I understand John's current design is slightly over $200,000, which meets the dollar amount Steve thinks
is workable. The way John has done this design, if there is a need for a through street, it can be extended
fairly easily at a later date or when financing is available. Chris has a meeting Monday afternoon with the
Mayor. I believe she is going to brief him regarding the status of the Babe Ruth facility. I am taking a copy
of the current plan to her for that meeting.
It seems that the current design is somewhere in the middle, meeting several people's desires. John has
been in a tough position trying to get agreement out of numerous people who are trying to accomplish
different goals. Hope this e-mail helps get us all on the same page.
From: REINHARD Dave N
To: HAMMITT Bob; ANDERSEN Chris F; LYLE Les A; LANKSTON Jeff
Cc: McNEEL Gary A; LUDEKE Gary L
Subject: RE: Babe Ruth Street
Date: Thursday, January 29, 1998 3:09PM
John did ask me last week about the concept of only building about the western half of the street initially,
due to lack of funding for the whole thing. My understanding was that he would look at a design for the
east "end" of the street that would keep options open for extending it eventually to the east. I told him
that if there was not going to be enough funding I thought it was reasonable to try to go with a western
section only. Guess I thought there would be some additional review of this with Trans. and Eng. divisions
Page 1
