B ob 14.
YL
Neighbors of Charnel Mulligan Park (17th and Charnelton) gathered
in the park on Monday evening, May 18th to discuss current and
future uses and needs of the park. An impressive number of people
(more than thirty, plus children) turned out to attend the meeting
and spoke individually regarding their concerns and ideas for
change. Included in the group were Mary Bentsen (chairperson for
J.A.N.), Bev Collins (a community liaison for the Eugene Dept. of
Public Safety) and Brian McCarthy (one of the original landscape
architects of Mulligan Park).
Mulligan Park is unique in that it was initiated at the request and
perseverance of the neighborhood, and it was designed bycaa
cooperative effort of the neighborhood, the city and a
private architectural firm as a multiple use park. It includes a
variety of trees and shrubs, a flat grassy field, a children's play
structure, an attractive covered shelter and historic street lamps.
Everyone at the meeting agreed that the park is a wonderful asset
to our neighborhood. In the past h music concerts, libary
publ sponsored activities the park: c
plays and an Asian Moon Festival.
The meeting was organized to discuss growing concerns about abuse
and inappropriate use of the park, and to address dpr g and needs. The
following topics were discussed: Drug dealing,
abuse, litter and broken glass, human and dog excrement, t, h et ne
for a restroom, non - compliance of leash rs
feeling unsafe in the park, intrusions into private property around
n at the
the park, misuse of the alley, a s current walkway where it meets 16th Ave., an d the Park Department'
use of herbicides in vegetation management.
One of the most positive outcomes of the meeting was the
opportunity people had to share opinions and ideas, gain support
from one another and realize that we can all benefit from knowing
each other better.
The group welcomes input from all park users and plans to meet on
on
a regular basis. The next meeting
time be be up to
Monday, June 8 at 7PM. At that
begin dealing with the various issues raised.
