Chris Anderson
Director of Public Works, City of Eugene
October 12, 1993
Dear Chris Anderson,
As a family of three, we are against the proposed lights instal-
lation. Living adjacent the Monroe school grounds to the north
of Ascot Park -- street address 2882 Bailey lane -- puts us in
the middle of the comings and goings at the playing fields.
We could tell you stories about how our boundaries have already
been violated by visiting park users, how we have scrubbed
graffitti off our fences, how we have balls launched with
regularity into our gardens, how the noise from a vocal crowd is
sometimes beyond the bounds of decency.
We are concerned here about the idea of an over - extended playing
schedule. Others have stated some of the negatives elsewhere:
increased traffic and congestion, greater influx of outsiders
into the neighborhood with disregard for the current needs of
those who live here, exacerbated noise and garbage problems,
additional maintenance difficulties, decreased property value
-- not to mention reduced quality of life.
We would, however, like you to consider the needs of a single
three - year -old girl, our daughter, who is in bed at 8:30 pm. She
needs some quiet during the late evening to get her rest.
Indeed, we expect her to be asleep by 9:00 pm, so that she may
start the following day fresh and with confidence.
How ironic then that those in pursuit of recreation and relaxa-
tion would impose their commotion into the life and routine of a
young girl. It is a matter of very basic decency and respect.
In conclusion, the playing fields are already used for many
hours. The addition of nighttime athletics at Ascot Park would
over - extend facility usage and create a greater burden upon
neighbors than benefit to recreation seekers would warrant.
Please leave the night'as it belongs - for the young to sleep.
Thank you.
Ben Feinbaum & Sue Reekie for Sophie Reekie - Feinbaum
