21. Using the .75 cars per player factor, 60 players would need 45 parking
spaces. Giving consideration to the fact that there is some over lapping of
players arriving for the next time slot before the earlier timeslot players
are finished and departed, a 1.5 overlap factor is recommended. The cost per
parking space could run from $900 to $1700 per space, depending on such
variables as whether there is a gravel base already existing, storm drainage
amenities needed, single aisles vs. double aisles, etc.
22. Athletes and parents of athletes have a preference to park as close to the
game site as possible. This leads to on- street parking and field parking at
some locations.
23. Sheldon's athletic program needs both a varsity soccer field and a
practice football field simultaneously. Two softball fields will not fit in
the space east of the track. The spaces at Meadowlark are not large enough to
accommodate adult sized fields.
24. Fields can be damaged by too much usage, which will vary depending on
climatic conditions. Kincaid, Graham and Century (Amazon) Soccer are fields
that can withstand the most usage in poor weather due to the drainage systems
employed. Ascot is a close second because of soils that naturally have good
drainage characteristics. Century was damaged last winter when overused after
other fields became too muddy in the continually wet weather. The cost to
repair a damaged field is generally less than the annual routine maintenance
costs for another field. However, the loss of the field that accommodates 15
games per week (30 teams /over $10,000 gross revenue at City league rates, and
approximately $25,000 at Kidsports rates).
25. Soccer play causes the most turf damage. 14 games per week is considered
the maximum capacity for the best turf conditions when cleated shoes are used.
Players without cleated shoes and younger players cause slightly less damage.
Lighting fields to maximize soccer play can not be justified. Softball play
does not lead to serious turf wear; lighting to maximize softball play is
encouraged.
26. During the wet spring of '93 when other fields got too muddy and were
closed, teams migrated to the best field remaining, Century- Amazon, which the
city also posted as closed. Continually disregarding the closure posting, the
field was damaged so much by the equivalent of over 20 games per week that it
has been closed for restoration, with the next play scheduled in the spring of
'94. Summer and fall softball leagues for adults and soccer for both adults
and Kidsports have been impacted by this closure. Estimating that 7 city
games and 7 Kidsports games might have been scheduled at Amazon, the revenue
lost is estimated to have been $5300 and $12,600 respectively.
CONSIDERATIONS
1. A double field complex that must have lights go out at 9:15 p.m. has no
greater playing capacity than a single field that can remain lit until 10:45
during the spring and summer months. They continue to be an advantage in the
fall months when the first evening time slot needs light before games end.
3
