Memo
TO: Jeff Lankston
FROM: Andrea Riner
Teri Higgins
Renee Grube
Tim Rhay
DATE: November 7, 2000
RE: Youth Sports Parks
Contingency Funds
Members of the Youth Sports Park Design Committee (City staff only) discussed the following
priorities for spending any available City contingency funds (estimates are preliminary):
• Providing park signage at Cal Young, Sheldon, and Churchill Youth Sports Parks
($10,000);
• Developing a vehicle drop - off adjacent to the basketball court and skatepark at Cal
Young Youth Sports Park ($30,000);
• Resurfacing the existing tennis courts at Sheldon and Churchill ($30,000);
• Widening the pathways from 5' to 8' ($25,000); and
• Purchasing 10 year replacement bulbs for the field lighting ($24,000).
The committee expressed strong support for using contingency funds to enhance the budget for
the POS- funded athletic field upgrade at Jefferson Middle School. Current funding allows
only minimal maintenance upgrades at this site. With additional funds (approx. $100,000) the
City would be able to provide two full -sized soccer fields with sand - channel drainage. This
would increase our overall inventory and allow for improved maintenance by providing fields
which can be rotated to reduce field wear patterns. Since this would be an improvement to a
youth athletic facility on 4j property, the committee felt that the intent of the funding would be
met.
Other proposals for providing additional Youth Sports Park improvements included:
• Improving skate park safety, such as increasing the fence height to 4' in some locations;
• Providing additional bollards at Cal Young and Sheldon Youth Sports Parks to deter
vehicles from driving into the site;
• Replacing paper towel dispensers with electric hand dryers in restrooms at all three sites
(this is being done);
• Increasing path lighting as may be needed to ensure pedestrian safety;
• Replacing fencing around the Cal Young channel and providing mow strip;
• Completing finish work around an electrical vault at Cal Young; and
• Providing additional site amenities as may be needed, i.e., trash cans, benches, picnic
tables, etc.
