Amazon Pool Renovation
More than $4 million of the parks and open space measure was dedicated to renovating Amazon
Pool. After an extensive public review process, City staff and pool consultants have refined the
pool project design to include a new 50 -meter pool with diving boards, a new shallow -water
multipurpose pool, renovations to the existing beginner pool, new decks and fencing, a sand play
area, and a new concessions building. Construction is anticipated to begin in late August 2000
and be completed by early July 2001.
It(onS
If you'd like more information about any of these projects, call Public Works Administration at
682 -5523, or visit the internet at www.ci.eugene.or.us /pw /parks.
Youth Help Design Parks
Public involvement is crucial in park planning, and who better to help design youth facilities than
the -yo *ngstei's -who will use them.
 - jav x a 1
Skateboard parks are a case in point. With two such parks planned as part of the parks and open
space measure, City staff turned to Eric Dawkins of Great American Skate Parks, a nationally
known designer and consultant. A series of public design meetings was set up, and more than 150
people — many of them young skateboarders — turned out for the first session at South Eugene
High School.
Irwin Park is another success story of young people participating in the park planning process.
Youngsters who live in the neighborhood served by the park turned out for several design -
sessions. Their participation in the initial phases of the project will ensure that the park meets
their needs and will be something they use and respect.
Yet another example of youth involvement are the surveys of students at Sheldon and Churchill
high schools and Cal Young Middle School. Contributing to health and fitness and providing
social opportunities were the benefits of recreation most important to students who answered the
surveys.
For more information about youth involvement in the parks planning process, call 682 -4800.
