1
both by e-mail and by telephone in late 2000. In addition, the only time you failed to meet in
person was a field meeting that had been requested with a single day's notice and happening during
your working hours.
On a personal note, I want to assure you and the City Manager that I have found you to be easy to contact
and quick to return messages.
As a result of our meeting, here is what I've asked City staff to do:
• Add two gravel parking spaces to replace parking lost to fire lane restrictions.
•
Return the large trail system sign as close as possible to its original condition. This will include
replacing the posts, the top, and the four additional plastic signs, as well as positioning the sign in
the most appropriate location. A `YOU ARE HERE' tag will also be placed on this sign, as well as
the rest of the Ridgeline Trail signs.
• Thoroughly examine the newly constructed trail again next year after the rainy season and repair or
reinforce any damaged sections.
I believe that the parkiing spaces are already completed, and that the sign is waiting only for the five plastic
sign additions. These additional signs will be installed once they are acquired.
We pride ourselves on listening and responding to the public, which makes this particular situation
especially painful for us. I have personally talked with all the staff involved, and while it is clear in this
case that multiple errors were made by City staff I can assure you that none of them were intentional or
malicious. We all take very seriously our responsibility to manage Eugene's public resources wisely,
carefully and effectively.
If you still have concerns or comments, please feel free to contact me directly by phone at (541) 682 -4930
or by e-mail johnnv.r.medlin @ci.eugene.or.us. Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing from you in
the spring after you have inspected the trail for winter damage.
Sin ely /
e7/
Johnny Medlin
Director, Parks & Open Space Division
CC: Jim Johnson
Andrea Riner
Jim McLaughlin
Philip Richardson
Jesse Cary-Hobbs
2
