FODOR & ASSOCIATES
Community Planning Consulting
May 31, 2005
Analysis of Parkland in South Eugene
Based on the Draft Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Comprehensive Plan, South
Eugene has 21% of the city's population, but appears to have more than its share of
parkland acreage (44 %). However, closer examination shows that parkland figures are
heavily skewed by the presence of three regional parks and one semi - regional park in
this district.
' South Eugene is listed as containing the following regional facilities:
• Spencer Butte Park and the Ridgeline Trail System (800+ acres)
• Laurelwood Golf Course (92 acres)
• Hendricks Park (81 acres)
(mor These facilities serve the entire city, and the county. If these three regional facilities are
removed from the total parkland attributed to South Eugene, then this district has just
under 11% of the city's parkland acreage.
South Eugene is shown as having two of the ten "community parks" in the city.
However, Amazon Park makes up two - thirds of the community park land in South
Eugene (90 acres). This park is actually a "semi- regional" park. Amazon Park is highly
accessible to the City Center district and has jogging trails, tennis courts and ball fields
that serve both community users and regional or metropolitan users. If Amazon Park
was allocated as a regional facility (metropolitan park), then South Eugene would have
only one community park (Westmoreland Park).
The proximity of regional park facilities to certain park districts can create the
impression that these districts are over - endowed with parks. This is the case for the
South Eugene district and is also true for the Willow Creek and Bethel - Danebo districts
that contain the West Eugene Wetlands.
c
394 East 32nd Avenue • Eugene, OR 97405
541/345 -8246 • fax: 541/345 -2747 • email: info @fodorandassociates.com
100% Post-Consumer Recycled Paper
