EUGENE
Public Works
Parks & Open Space
City of Eugene
1820 Roosevelt Blvd.
Eugene, Oregon 97402
August 9, 2001 (541) 682 -4800
(541) 682 -4882 FAX
www. ci. eugene.or. us
Suzanne Lewis
P.O. Box 2569
Eugene, OR 97402
Dear Ms. Lewis,
Your letter of July 23, 2001, to Kurt Corey was recently forwarded to me for response. I very much
appreciate your interest in the care of the heirloom rose section of Eugene's Owen Rose Garden. Everyone
involved with the Owen Rose Garden shares your goals of keeping our rose garden one of the best on the
west coast. I am attaching a recent letter to the Mayor and City Council from Andrea Riner, Park Planning
Manage regarding the work in the heirloom rose section of the garden. In addition, I hope the below
information will be helpful for you.
We agree that it would have been better if the moving of the roses would have occurred earlier in the
season. As a result of these and similar concems expressed by others, a series of meetings was held with
the gardeners, other involved staff, and some community members. I feel communication and
understanding of responsibilities between the gardeners and other staff who work in the garden has been
improved as a result. The gardeners are our experts on roses and it is their responsibility to ensure
everyone is made aware if proposed activities would be detrimental to the collection.
In regard to your question about the America Roses, the gardeners have prepared a list of heirloom roses
for the pergola, as mentioned in your letter. Unfortunately, some of these roses are going to take some time
to obtain. The America Roses you referenced were planted only as a temporary placeholder and will be
moved once the permanent roses are obtained.
We plan to take a great deal of care in ensuring the roses are not damaged by the work remaining to be
completed. The gardeners have been instructed to monitor all work in terms of impact to the roses and we
will work together to mitigate any negative effects.
If you would like more information on the Owen Rose Garden and upcoming projects, please contact John
Weber or Sarah Medary at (541) 682 -4800.
Since ely,
Andrea G. Riner, Acting in Capacity Director
Parks & Open Space Division
