HAMMITT Bob
From: JONES Eric R
To: TERRETT Brian S
Cc: ETTER John F; MORGAN Dick A; HAMMITT Bob; ANDERSEN Chris F; EVELETH Doug
A
Subject: Owen Rose Garden project
Date: Friday, October 10, 1997 1:32PM
I've done some research and talked to a few folks and have the following information and recommendation
about the Owen Rose Garden project:
BRING Recycling is doing the demolition of the old structure at Owen Rose Garden. Work should
start in two or three weeks and take several weeks to complete. BRING's bid to demolish the structure
(and recycle as much of the material as possible) is approximately $6,000 less than the early estimate of
that part of the project. So, some savings although not a huge amount.
Construction is nearing completion on a separate but related contract to build a new office /garage
structure in the maintenance area at Owen Rose Garden. This is a 900 - square -foot, wood -frame structure
designed primarily as a storage place for supplies, equipment, and a small space for onsite staff.
A master plan is in place for some very interesting future improvements at Owen Rose Garden.
However, none of these improvements are currently budgeted or scheduled for construction. The current
work is mostly to remove a hazardous structure and provide a functional space for park operations.
My recommendation is to wait until a couple of months until the current work is completed (i.e., the new
structure is finished and the old structure has been demolished). At that point, hold a news
conference /dedication event. Among the folks who might want to attend would be Councilor Meisner and
other members of the Council, representatives from BRING and Paul Tiege Construction (the contractor
building the new structure), members of the Eugene Rose Society, and heirs of the Owen family. We could
use this event to talk about recycling, the history of the park, and the future.
Chris is comfortable with this approach. It's also a fairly safe approach since we'll be talking about work
that has been successfully completed rather than work that hasn't begun yet or is under way (sometimes
things don't always go according to plan). TV would be missing some demolition shots, but we may be
able to provide some props at the dedication event (perhaps some unique salvaged fixtures or ? ?? that
BRING could have on hand) for visuals.
If this sounds like a reasonable approach, we need to let Councilor Meisner know that we have an idea that
addresses his suggestion. Would you like to communicate that, or would you rather that someone in PW
contacted him?
EricJ
Page 1
