-21' 95 (TUE) 12 :11 JEAN TATE REAL ESTAT TEL:9 -465 8169 P. 002
15 November 1995
Dear Johns Webber and Etter,
A week or so after our meeting with you at the Atrium, most of our design committee
gathered at Owen Rose Garden and looked at the plans while walling the site. These are some of
the thoughts and reactions we had. We were not unanimous in all of our discussion, but I've tried
here to capture the range of our thoughts.
- We should strive not to introduce unnecessary change but to take advantage of existing design
and plantings. One of our design criteria should be the preservation and enhancement of the e
existing collection of old roses which is unique_ We have large and valuable shrubs which are
scarcely found elsewhere on the west coast.
• Several thought that the existing path on the south edge of the modern rose lawn should remain in 0i--
its present configuration. Let the land drop away from the modern rose area to provide a slight .
separation from the old roses while maintaining visual contact. Ib
• We were unanimous in not wanting to remove the hedge along the bike path to the wesL There is
room west of the hedge for the proposed pole and wire structures supporting climbers (which
we do like).
• We were unanimous that the proposed path on the south side of the garden parallel to the service 9sto
road is unnecessary and undesirable. Its removal would provide space for a variety of old rose
groupings.
- All of us felt that the ambiance within an old rose garden should be different than that of a modem
rose garden. Some separation would be in order, as the design within the old rose area should ,,ot
be quite different than that of the modern rose area_ The old rose area would ideally consist of 9
several smaller, self - contained gardens, each in a style appropriate to the roses it displayed.
The area where the house was could be treated quite differently than the rest of the old rose
area, and neither would have the open, flat beds appropriate for the modem roses around the
great lawn. For example, the former house area could become a teaching garden with
specimens of each class of old rose.
• We are extremely supportive of closing the garden during off hours to protect the plantings. The
gates and "fencing" we already discussed seem like a good idea_
We had a variety of reactions to the pergolas as proposed:
• Several thought the large circular one was undesirable and/or too large. i. i
• Others suggested placing it more toward the NW of the area, closer to the change in elevation and V'
bike path.
• The circular structure could also be free standing, detached from the long pergola. This would
allow people to see and appreciate each of the two pergolas from the other.
• We strongly endorse the concept of a long pergola. We had several ideas regarding it:
- We were unanimous that the long pergola should be relocated at the parking lot end to avoid vr
disturbing the large R. roxbughii and other species shrubs which are sensitive to .k
relocation. 1/
• One suggestion for the long pergola was to run it along the existing path from the parking
area and make a right angle turn north along the existing path to the west of the house
running up toward the modern rose area. This would provide an entrance to the old rose
area and a means of moving toward the modem area as well as a good westward view of
the circular structure across a lawn.
We hope these suggestions are helpful and look forward to talking with you both again_
Sincerely,
Pam Perryman
for the Eugene Rose Society
