Mariposa Woodland Oak Habitat Enhancement Project
Spencer Butte Site
This area was selected because it represents one of the higher quality oak savanna areas remaining, it is
accessible, lends itself well to educational outreach, and is a good representative example of the kind
of habitat and management issues that we are facing in similar areas elsewhere. Additionally, there is
an opportunity to complement the work already being undertaken by an adjacent property owner who
has expressed interest in cooperating. Appendix 1 includes aerial photos comparing the site in 1940
and 2004. The photos show clearly that conifer encroachment into this community is significant.
This site is located about 500 yards up the trail from the Willamette /52 °d parking lot along Willamette
Street. The entire project area spans 5 acres. Figure 1 shows is exemplary of the site conditions with a
few large and many small oaks with significant recruitment of Douglas -fir occurring.
i • 41#4,1195
•
F id's
•
Figure 1: Photopoint showing young conifers encroaching into oak community
Janet Reeves, the neighbor to the west, hired Integrated Resource Management (IGR), a silviculture
company managed by Darrin Stringer, to thin oaks and conifers from her property. She hoped to
reduce the fire danger and to enhance conditions for the remnant oak savanna community on her
property. At that time, IGR approached the City to see if we were interested in complementing Janet
Reeve's project on our side of the property line.
4
