j SO CIE 1.
t o0>
o
T ? o NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY OF OREGON
c
z
Dedicated to the enjoyment conservation and study
of Oregon's native plants and habitats.
A °Nne %e6.
April 7, 2009
Parks and Open Space Director
1820 Roosevelt Blvd.
Eugene, OR 97402
Dear Johnny Medlin,
The Emerald Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Oregon strongly endorses the
Mariposa Woodland Management Plan of the City of Eugene. This project, for the
northwest corner of Spencer Butte Park will be an important demonstration for
enhancement and restoration of native ecosystems.
The plan clearly sets out goals and objectives and indicators for measuring results.
The ancient ponderosa pine trees, some designated as heritage trees, are a high
priority for protection. Like other areas in Eugene, the Mariposa woodland site is
under encroachment from native conifers and many non - native shrubs, forbs and
grasses. In order to maintain this high quality example of oak -pine habitat, in the
absence of regular burns, active management is required. The "Ridgeline Area Open
Space Vision and Action Plan ", supported and endorsed by many environmental
groups such as The Nature Conservancy, McKenzie River Trust, and Long Ton
Watershed Council, recommended management actions be applied to Spencer Butte
Park. Many of the specific habitat management actions included in this plan are
based on this document.
The planned strategy is a thorough and comprehensive conservation assessment,
and a framework for strategies to protect and restore our native habitats and
species. Of greatest importance is the protection of the oak -pine woodland and
savanna.
The Emerald Chapter enthusiastically supports the City of Eugene in its goals at
Spencer Butte and the methods of achieving these goals.
Sincerely, > I ^I )
•
Brian Basor Dr. Rhoda Love
President, Emerald Chapter Conservation Chair, Emerald Chapter
Native Plant Society of Oregon Native Plant Society of Oregon
bcb10@humboldt.edu rglove @uoregon.edu
Emerald Chapter • www.EmeraldNPSO.org • P.O.
