07/24/95 13:25 $503 683 6804 EUG PUBLIC SFTY Von
peL): Maritirrr
Media Advisory
Eugene Department of Public Safety
Follovvup to Maurie Jacobs Park Incident
Monday, July 24, 1994
Eugene police met with city parks staff this morning to clarify permit - related issues around
the use of Maurie Jacobs Park on Sunday, July 23. The event which drew vendors and other peo-
ple into the park was called "Vortex" and had not received a park use permit, as required by city or-
dinance. Posters had apparently becn distributed around the area advertising the event. Text of the
posters reads as follows: "Vortex...High Noon...Maurie Jacobs Park, Eugene, OR...Sunday, July
23, 1995... Music- Theater - Drumming- Dance -Food- Crafts - Healing- Workshops - Tabling- Cames-
Pagcantry...For More info, Call 503- 341- 3823...Printed on Hemp Paper...Save the Trees...A
Free Event." At this time, investigators are attempting to determine the identity of the event's orga-
nizers.
The only permit issued for use of Maurie Jacobs Park on Sunday was for the "Spencer
Butte Gazette Annual Potluck." That permit indicated that the event would be held from 4 to 8
p.m., with 30 to 40 people in attendance, and amplified sound between 6:01 and 8 p.m. That per-
mit was issued to David R. Sweet, of Eugene.
# ##
