August 1, 2014

CONTACT: Kerry Werner, Project Manager, 541-505-4703

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

16 Eugene Streets to be Slurry Sealed Week of August 4
Sixteen Eugene-area residential streets will receive a life-extending treatment called slurry
sealing the week of August 4.
Filling cracks and sealing streets with a protective coating of asphalt emulsion mixed with
sand prolongs pavement life by keeping water out of the road base. Slurry sealing also protects
pavement from oxidation, which leads to brittleness and cracking. It restores a uniform driving
surface and surface friction, which improves drivability and skid resistance. Typically this type of
treatment is used only on local streets that don’t carry much traffic.
Streets being slurry sealed are closed to all traffic for up to eight hours.
Scheduled for treatment on Tuesday, Aug. 5, are 4 Avenue west of Wallis Street, 5 Avenue
thth
east of Wallis Street, 14 Avenue from Acorn Park to Buck Street, 20 Avenue from City View to
thth
McKinley Street, Buck Street cul de sac, McKinley Street south of 19 Avenue, and Soloman Loop.
th
Scheduled for treatment on Aug. 6 or Aug. 7: Breezewood Avenue, Chaucer Way, Greiner Street,
Josh Street, Pam Street Shelton Avenue, Stansby Way, Strathmore Place, and Sunrise Boulevard
south of Broadview.
Blackline Inc. of Portland submitted the low bid of $169,000 to do this year’s slurry sealing
project under contract to the Eugene Public Works Department. The job calls for 12,000 pounds of
crack sealing material and 58,000 square yards of slurry sealing. Funding for the annual program
comes from the City’s capital road fund.
More information, including a detailed work schedule, a complete list of streets being
treated, and tips for residents on streets being slurry sealed is available at www.eugene-
or.gov/slurryseal.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
