. CIC Memo -- Hendricks Park Forested Area Department Advisory Committee
Page 2
February 12, 1998
• Residents of the Fairmount and Laurel Hill neighborhoods - One representative to be
selected from residents of each neighborhood, based on nominations by the leaders of
each neighborhood group.
• Immediate neighbors of the park -- This is defined as people who live within one block
of the park. Two representatives to be selected.
• Rhododendron Society -- One representative who is a member and can represent the
interests of the Rhododendron Society, to be nominated by the Rhododendron Society.
• People in tree - related professions -- Two representatives from professions dealing with
forestry or related professions. A special emphasis will be given to select people who
have experience dealing with trees in both natural and urban environments.
• Members of the voters' pool -- Two representatives will be selected from the randomly
selected voters pool, focusing on voters who have indicated an interest in relevant issues
(e.g., parks, public safety).
• Frequent Park User — One representative who frequently uses the park but lives outside
of abutting neighborhood boundaries.
• Wildlife Advocat/expert — One representative who works in a profession or is a
member of a association dedicated to the management of wildlife and associated habitat.
In order to assist this large and potentially diverse group of people, the City plans to provide
facilitation services. Staff is prepared to provide the appropriate level of technical support for the
committee.
Outreach Strategies to Solicit Applicants
• A newspaper advertisement (sample attached) ran in the Saturday, January 24, 1998,
issue of The Register Guard.
• A postcard (sample attached) was mailed January 22 to approximately ?? residents who
have previously placed themselves on an interested parties mailing list. The postcard also
was sent to all residents and property owners in the immediate vicinity of the forested
areas of the park.
• Staff is in the process of telephoning members of the voters' pool to solicit applications
from that group.
• Information about the formation of the committee will be provided to the Fairmount and
Laurel Hill neighborhoods, to the Rhododendron Society, and to professional forestry
groups to encourage their members to submit applications.
