August 211997 240 Sunset Drive
Eugene, OR 97403
To: Scott Plamondon, Urban Forester, Public Works, City of Eugene
From: Gloria Merriam, Hendricks Park Group
Re: Tree Removal
Following the group tour Monday night I realized I really lacked the knowledge to
make decisions about the potential hazards of the 18 Douglas firs on the east side of
Hendricks Park which have been marked for removal. However, I did gain quite a
bit of information and now have a better understanding of the reasons they could be
cut down.
Although I generally and strongly oppose the cutting of older trees in our city,
especially those which enhance our ridgeline and parks, I also can understand the
homeowners' concerns and the City's possible liability. I finally came to some sort
of rationale similar to the 'Let it burn' policy of the Forest Service. Let it live, in this
case, unless it presents a clear and present danger to human life/ homes/ the shelter.
I certainly don't feel qualified to make such decisions based on Monday's inspection
tour. My recommendations are based on the data the City has obtained from
samples and observations taken so far, as well as my own evaluation. While I
would prefer to see none of the trees removed, I can see some justification for the
removal of five of the trees: 28, 53, 47, 68,112. I oppose the removal of five other
trees at this time: 86, 87, 90, 93, 83. Of the other eight trees, I would prefer we wait
and monitor.
Many thanks to Scott Plamondon, Michael Robert, Johnny Medlin and Carrie
Jennings for their fine work with this group. I look forward to further discussion at
our meeting Sept. 8 or 9.
Sincerely,
Gloria Merriam
