TREE.DFT Page 2
r
This included reducing the watering schedules around the shelter and moving the rhododendron out of the
area. - Mike
The group came with the expectation that they could provide a service to the Parks Dept. which included the
gathering of information and the creation of a master park management plan. - Mike
The group came expecting a "laid back" presentation that could include a discussion of issues including past
practices in the park, relationship building between the staff and citizen groups, and covert activities
between City Officials and the development community. - Mike
GROUPS RECOMMENDATIONS:
The group had many good ideas about how to manage the forest asset. The felt it was important to reduce
irrigation on the trees, provide for drainage away from the trees, replant with a mixed species and create a
closure of the wind tunnel up Summit St. by the planting of trees to form a barrier. - Scott
The group, except for the neighbors that border the park where the hazard trees exist, felt that phased
removal was the best option. They seemed resigned to the fact that the trees need to be removed even
though they didn't agree with that assessment. They just preferred to have the removal done more gradually.
- Scott
The group had several different ways to look at mitigating the hazards relating to these trees. These
included having the abutting property owners sign release of liability for any damage tree failure might
cause, having a storm/high wind warning system installed through the 911 dispatch system. This proposal
would involve the contacting of abutting property owners in the event of a high wind event. - Mike
They also recommended the removal of the trees in a slower more constrained manner. This would take up
to several years to implement and was referred to as an experiment in forest management by one of the
group members. - Mike
One of the expert members closed the meeting with the recommendation that we clear cut the saddle and
start over again. - Mike
Another expert recommended that we plant trees ASAP in order to establish a buffer zone of strong well
conditioned trees to help reduce the wind throw affect. - Mike
