A new picnic and play area should be developed in the park before <br /> any of the existing picnic and play area be removed. <br /> Concerning the Shelter and central area of the park: <br /> 7. Over time, as the rhododendron garden evolves, the Shelter should <br /> be developed as an adjunct of the rhododendron garden, such as <br /> information center. Another facility should be developed for <br /> picnicking and group gatherings in a more compatible area of the <br /> park. <br /> a. The current Shelter use is incompatible with the rhododendron <br /> garden and with the potential expansion of the garden. <br /> 8. The central area of the park around the Shelter should be integrated <br /> with the rhododendron garden by removing some plants and regrouping <br /> others, and the pedestrian trails, crosswalks and lighting should <br /> also be used to integrate this central area. <br /> 9. Pedestrian trails should be established now to separate pedestrians <br /> and motor vehicle traffic, and connect parking with the rhododendron <br /> garden. <br /> Concerning the grouping of plants: <br /> 10. When the plants of the garden are moved and the design refined, the <br /> significant collections should be kept in groupings and designated <br /> as such. <br /> Concerning the entrances and edges of the park and rhododendron garden: <br /> 11. The entrances of the park and rhododendron garden should be enhanced <br /> by planting, signing, and removal of power lines. <br /> 12. The edges of the parking lot at the Skyline Drive entrance to the <br /> rhododendron garden should be enhanced by adding a boardwalk to the <br /> northwest section, and the planting should be restored beyond this <br /> parking lot edge. <br /> 13. The outside edges of the rhododendron garden should become better <br /> interfaces with the private homes by screening and improving vistas. <br />
