3. Reference library: a collection of books, pamphlets, periodicals
for reference; slide collection; photographic collection
4. A space to store and display saps and records of the plants
in the garden
3. Office or desk apace for those people working to carry out the
directions of the center
6. Various service and storage spaces
Picnicking could be accommodated in one or more new structures to
be built for this use in another section of the park. This would
compensate for the converted use of the existing structure.
e. Parking space: additional parking apace is needed to better accommodate
the people interested in visiting the garden- -this new parking space
to be provided along Heights Boulevard.
An interesting and important part of any change or addition to the garden
is how is it to be accomplished and is it feasible in the present area.
Also, what will be the coat and will it be justified by any new benefits?
The additions and changes proposed for the Rhododendron Garden could provide
great benefit at a relatively low coat. The vacation of the present Hendricks
Park parking lot and its addition to the Rhododendron Garden would greatly
enhance the garden. Thia moat valluable space is relatively open and
would complement the existing open apace at the top of the hill.
The existing picnic shelter would be converted to an information center
and would become a principal feature of the garden.
It is my recommendation that the schematic plan proposal as submitted
by as and approved by the Rhododendron Garden Resource Committee at its
meeting on February 18, 1985, be used to develop a new comprehensive plan
for the Rhododendron Garden and that this be followed by a start on the
construction to provide for a more integrated and expanded garden.
