June 10, 1985
To: Rhododendron Garden Resource Committee
From: W. Riley Matsler
Subject: Recommendations
The following are recommendations for the Rhododendron Garden for your
review and approval:
I. Preparation for 1987
1. Replace fountain in Gick Memorial. I will volunteer to assist
in building a replacement under Phil Gilmore's supervision.
2. Prune all leggy and overgrown plants.
3. Identify different collections donated to the garden.
4. Construct additional parking south of picnic area as recommended
by the Committee.
5. Remove columnar conifers on west end of open area.
6. Provide more seating that can be used in final plan.
7. Clean up entire garden area.
II. Long Range Plan
1. Prepare master plan for garden including area south of Summit
Drive. Note: No plants to be moved into proposed garden area
until master plan and detailed planting plan has been completed.
2. Retain Ted Trembrst to identify all donated plants, and tag
sane with all- weather tags.
3. Appoint a small committee of three to five members to evaluate
all plants in garden and tag those not to be in the garden.
4. That this committee recommend that the rhododendron garden be
included in Mayor Obie's city beautification plan.
5. That final planting plan include more, small rhododendron plus
other deciduous, broadleaf, evergreen, conifers, and bedding
plants to improve appearance, interest, and prolong year -round
effect.
6. Special attention should be given to trees recently planted
in the garden. The location and number of trees in many areas
dust don't make sense.
7. The new.easter plan should provide for more openness and those
plants crowded into open area should be removed.
8. That this committee be allowed to present and defend its findings
and to approve or disapprove the final master plans for the
garden.
9. That the City doe* not have veers to implement these findings.
but must start immediately to provide the proper space and habitat
for this outstanding collection of rhododendron.
