qREER GARDENS
1280 Goodpasture Island Rd
Eugene, OR 97401 -1794 -4; \, .
(503) 686 -8266 phone % t ft
(503) 686 -0910 fax
May 1, 1995
To: Lane County Tourism Council
Re: Funds to print brochure for Hendricks Park
This project will help aquaint people from other areas with the fact that Eugene has a world class garden in
Hendricks Park. Gardening is currently one of the fastest growing interests, with many people searching for
superior gardens to visit. This brochure will help advertise the garden to people in other areas both in state and
out of state.
Tourism and overnight stays in the area are promoted by visits to Hendricks Park. Seeing the beautiful plants in
the garden also creates a desire to purchase plants for the visitors garden. This in turn helps stimulate the num-
ber one agricultural (plant) crop in the state of Oregon, that being the nursery industry.
As owner of Greer Gardens, an internationally known nursery that specializes in mail order, we constantly have
people visiting the nursery from many areas of the world. For example, yesterday we had a gentleman visit from
France. Many of these people know of Hendricks Park, and if they don't, we send them there. They are always
impressed. It is very helpful to have a quality brochure to hand out to potential visitors.
At the risk of sounding like "I'm great ", I would like to say that I have been President of the American
Rhododendron Society, have written books on rhododendrons, and have travelled the world in search of gardens.
This gives me the qualifications to express say that Hendricks Park is excellent and is an asset to the community.
It brings large numbers of visitors to the area. Michael Robert, Hendricks Park director, has done a great job of
improving the park to its current excellent quality. And yes, granting funds for this project will result in an
economic boost to the community and state.
H • rold E. Gree
