9. What is your criteria for success? How will you know if you have been successful?
Greater visitation to the Rhododendron Garden is our primary measure of success,
particularly visitation that extends throughout the year. Greater cooperation and support of
the area garden clubs and nurseries is another measure, bringing in conventions, study
groups, and participation of volunteers. The garden brochure is also a marketing tool which
interested parties frequently use to raise funds for donations such as memorial plantings or
construction of garden amenities.
We have measured increased visitation to the Rhododendron Garden since the first
publication of the brochure. Traffic volume was measured in 1985 and again in 1994. These
counts indicate that in 1994 more than 3,000 visitors arrived at Hendricks Park on Mother's
Day, generally our highest visitors day of the year, and that this is an increase of 400
compared to 1985. Further comparisons show that in the 12 peak days of the blooming
season (late April - early May) of 1994, 15,000 visitors arrived at Hendricks Park, with a daily
average increase of 360 visitors compared to 1985.
10. If your project is already underway (event booked and will occur between July 1995
and September 1995; brochure is already printed ), explain how this grant will increase
the results.
The Rhododendron Garden is open to the public year round; a brochure enhances the
visitor's experience of the garden, revealing more of its contents, history, and value. Printing
and distributing a brochure increases attendance and year round interest and promotes the
garden as a destination point for travellers and conventions. When the garden and its
contents are described in a brochure, the value of the Rhododendron Garden is also
enhanced as a demonstration garden, which promotes the nursery trade and the landscaping
industry.
11. Your project may be recommended only for partial funding. Assuming that you
receive only HALF the amount you are requesting, how will you modify your project?
(for example, would you reduce the number of copies printed? scale back the
distribution plan? delete the radio advertising? limit the event to 1 day instead of 2?
be forced to abandon the project ?)
If we received partial funding for printing a brochure, we would reduce the number of
copies; 5000 brochures is about a two year supply with average distribution. If we reduce
the number to 2500 we would be seeking funds from other sources in the following year ;
however it is more cost effective to print in larger quantities and expenses would be greater.
We would also look for other sources of funding, for example, donations from garden clubs
and nurseries and we would ask for larger donations from tour groups and conventions,
including a possible gate fee.
1
6
1
