4. Describe your experience in operating past or similar projects. Why are you
uniquely qualified to carry out this project?
The first edition of the Hendricks Park Rhododendron Garden brochure was printed in
1987. Our staff from Hendricks Park and the Public Relations and Marketing staff of the
Parks and Recreation Department produced the brochure. We also produced a second
printing of the same brochure in 1989 and submitted it to the American Association of
Botanical Gardens and Arboreta for the Dorothy Hansell Publication Award in the category of
institutions with an annual operating budget of less than $250,000. The brochure was
awarded an honorable mention. ( The letter announcing this award is included in the
attachments to this application.)
Our staff at Hendricks Park is the same at this time and able to provide information
and updating material for the brochure content. We will receive graphic design and marketing
support from our Public Work Administration department, which includes in -house staff to
complete all of the pre -press work. This office includes a senior graphic artist, who has
produced a variety of publications for the City of Eugene Public Works Department and an
assistant whose unique background in biology and art will be valuable. Her artistic work is
also published in a book on bonsai.
We also have the experience of managing grants and as an agent of the City of
Eugene have a cooperative working relationship with Lane County. Hendricks Park was
awarded a research grant by the American Rhododendron Society Research Foundation in
1989 and successfully completed the research and grant requirements.
5. Has special project funding been received for this same project in the past?
No X (go to 6)
6. What is your plan to become self- sufficient?
Group tours generally produce donations to Hendricks Park; we request a donation of
$1.00 per person for organized tours. This is the value of a single brochure and this money
can be set aside for the next re- printing. The increasing number of organized tours will
produce a increasing amount of revenue and we may also be able to increase donations from
garden clubs and upcoming conventions. At the present time we receive in kind donations
from these organizations.
4
