RHODY.MEM Page 1
MEMORANDUM
Date: May 3, 1995
From: Mary Wright- McIntosh
To: Glen Potter, Intergovernmental Relations
Subject: Summary of Grant Application
Staff submitted a "special projects grant application" to the Lane County Tourism Board
this afternoon to request $5,000 in funds to develop and produce 5,000 color brochures on
Hendricks Rhododendron Garden and a complementing index of plants for public
distribution. The grant was prepared by Hendricks Head Gardener Michael Robert on
behalf of the City of Eugene Public Works Maintenance, Parks Services division. The
application includes two letters of support from prominent local nurserymen Roger Gossler
(Gossler Farms Nursery) and Harold Greer (Greer Gardens).
The original brochure, printed in 1987, has been out of date and unfunded by the Garden's
budget for the past two years. Matching funds of $500 are required and will be supplied
by the division. If the grant is successful, design work will be done by staff within the
Public Works' administration division.
The updated brochure will include photos, a map of the Garden, and informative text on
the plant displays along respective memorial trails. Brochures distributed through
specialized nurseries and at garden society conventions (Magnolia Society, American
Rhododendron Society, Hardy Plant Society), attract local, national, and international
interest. Distributed through area Chambers of Commerce and the Visitor and Convention
Bureau draw tour groups and conventions nationwide. This is the only publication devoted
entirely to promote the Hendricks Rhododendron Garden.
pc: Bob Hammitt, Public Works Maintenance
