The Forest Management Plan established a number of
ambitious tasks, goals, and recommendations, among them:
• Strategies for Managing a dynamic forest in the
middle of an urban area.
• Strategies for controlling the invasive vegetation
taking over some areas of the park
• Ensuring citizens are provided an opportunity to learn
about the unique natural experience and passive
recreation opportunities here at Hendricks park
• Establishment of a private group who would provide
community advocacy for the park
• And among a number of other projects - the
establishment of a native plant garden.
budget constraints - Including native plant garden
However, in keeping with a long tradition of community support
for Eugene's Park, people have stepped forward to help make
these Forest Management Plan projects a reality.
• As we are all here to celebrate today, the Native Plant
Garden is coming to fruition through a model of
public /private partnership between the City of Eugene and
the community, initiated by Jerry Blakely and his late wife,
Mary.
2
