Position Requirements
The position of head person at Hendricks Park is multi - faceted and challenging to fill. Some
of the more critical requirements are:
• place knowledge in terms of the overall Park, its history, and its various components
• an integrated vision for the Park consistent with the FMP
• ability to reach out and include important constituencies
• extensive knowledge of horticulture, native plants, and urban forest ecosystems
• ability to motivate and coordinate, as an effective team, employees, temps, and
volunteers
One key shift in focus for the position being recommended by FoHP is less administration
and more hands -on internal Park development. It appears that in recent years the position has
moved to one of mostly administrative duties, many of which could hopefully be done by
other staff at POS headquarters. FoHP believes that the single most important focus for the
head person is delivering on the vision of the FMP and creating an integrated Park
environment that provides enhanced social, cultural, and educational opportunities for the
community at large.
Suggested Qualifications for the position:
Administrative qualities:
(1) Good communication skills — necessary for interaction with public and interest
groups as well as coordination of public /private partnership
(2) Good supervisory skills — for leading other workers, scheduling activities, and
coordinating outside work with other departments, contractors, and volunteers
(3) Gains respect from park staff and other groups who work in and support the park in
various ways, and also from members of the public who use the park
(4) Active support for and involvement in the public /private partnership between POS
and FoHP
(5) Community organizational experience such as enlisting and coordinating volunteers;
liaison with schools, community programs, and non - profits
(6) Leadership skills, so temporary workers, work -study students, FoHP and other
volunteer groups will want to work with the person
Park Specific qualities:
(1) Local knowledge of Hendricks Park — in terms of ecosystems, gardens, plants,
infrastructure, operations, and neighborhood relations
