CELEBRATING <br /> YOUTH SPORTS PARKS: <br /> A COMMUNICATIONS PLAN vr. ' <br /> Celebrating completed projects is one of nine strategies designed to accomplish the goals and objectives <br /> of the Parks and Open Space (POS) Communications Plan. The completion of the youth sports parks <br /> (YSP) is a significant POS milestone. <br /> OBJECTIVES <br /> • Foster awareness of the successful implementation of the Parks and Open Space bond measure. <br /> • Promote the benefits to youth provided by the youth sports parks <br /> • Convey the City's interest in finding cost - effective and innovative solutions to community needs <br /> KEY AUDIENCES <br /> • Eugene City Council <br /> • 4J School Board <br /> • High schools (students, parents, teachers, booster clubs) <br /> • Youth and adult athletic organizations <br /> • Neighborhoods <br /> • Eugene voters and taxpapers <br /> KEY MESSAGES <br /> • The youth sports parks are the result of a good working partnership between the City of Eugene and <br /> School District 4J <br /> • The innovative use of all- weather synthetic turf athletic fields greatly increases the amount of play time <br /> for community and school team sports <br /> • Youth sports parks are more than football fields <br /> - - Churchill High School -- all - weather field, improved soccer and softball fields, three half - <br /> court basketball courts, skate park, improved tennis courts, children's play area, picnic tables, <br /> walkways, trees, path lighting, restrooms. <br /> - - Sheldon High School -- all - weather field, full -size and two half -court basketball courts, new <br /> soccer field, improved softball fields, children's play area, performance space, walkways, trees, <br /> path lighting, restrooms, tennis courts (existing). <br /> - - Cal Young Middle School -- skate park, children's play area, walkways, path lighting, full -size <br /> basketball court, restrooms, soccer field (existing). <br /> • The investment in wholesome activity for young people and the community exceeds $7 million ($4 <br /> million from POS bond funds and $3.5 million from 4J) <br /> STRATEGIES <br /> • Hold a unique event at each YSP to emphasize neighborhood /local value (involve neighborhoods) <br /> • Coordinate with school district (including booster clubs) <br /> • Create "rolling celebration" (from one park to the next) to emphasize citywide value of YSP <br /> • Include lots of kids in the celebrations to emphasize benefits to youth <br /> • Include a diversity of activities at each location (emphasize variety of amenities) <br /> • Use advertising to create a major splash (corresponding with the significant investments being <br /> dedicated) <br /> • Use highly credible spokespeople to do the dedication (e.g., football and basketball stars) <br /> • Find ways to involve key audiences <br /> • Schedule event to minimize conflict with November election campaigns <br /> • Tie into other POS Communications Plan strategies <br />
