MINUTES OF THE USER COMMITTEE
May 21, 2002, in the Facilities Management Conference Room
2:00 -4:00 p.m.
Present: Bill Hirsh, Jeff Faust, Dave Battaglia, Arnold Hultberg, Tim Rhay, John Crane,
Paul Staudhammer, Janet Whitty, Johnny Medlin, Pat Latimer, & Pat Bonney. Mitzi
Colbath and Charlie Warren were both out of town.
YSP restroom vandalism: Tim Rhay reported on the various types of vandalism that
occur to our Youth Sports Park restrooms. Tim brought a notebook of pictures showing
some of the vandalism. It was noted such documentation is important and helpful when
designing public facilities because public property is always open to vandalism, so
substantial equipment is needed to withstand abuse.
Sweeper: Tim reported the sweeper has been fitted with the correct tires and is in use
now. Artificial turf fields are swept once a month or oftener if needed.
Report for Board: Bill Hirsh suggested this committee should send a report to the Board
regarding the success of this committee and the new fields and sports parks. Did anyone
volunteer to draft a report?
Concessions: Jeff Faust will meet with his sub committee & report at the next meeting.
Trash removal: Pat Latimer reported North has new metal containers in place now to
keep birds from spreading trash around. It was noted kids are eating lunch in the stands
and leaving a mess. There isn't enough time in the YSP custodian's shift to do all the
cleaning that's needed. There is a need to hire extra help to clean the stadiums. Jeff will
talk to Doug Lemley and H.R. about hiring students to do this work.
Governance sub committee: Currently, we have no process in place to take care of
issues that come up between our meetings. It was agreed to set up a Governance Sub
Committee (Dave Battaglia, John Crane, Pat Latimer & Bill Hirsh) to deal with such items
in accordance with the IGA. The sub committee's actions would be reported to the full
committee at its next meeting. Between meeting issues can be called or emailed to Pat
Bonney or Bill Hirsh.
Locks on gates: Jeff Faust reported 2 problems: (1) locks keep getting lost and (2)
pedestrian gates are left open and animals go thru and make a mess. He checked with
Island Fence and they recommended putting in gates with the lock incorporated in it (much
like a door). On the pedestrian gates, install strong springs so the gates will close
automatically. It was agreed Sheldon will try this approach, and if it works well, the other
sites may want to do the same.
Finances: Dave Battaglia reported we received more revenue this year than last for
community use of the artificial turf fields. He and Kathi Hernandez will discuss the
particulars of getting the revenue transferred to the District.
