Thieves take copper wire from bike path lighting <br /> Thieves take copper wire from bike path lighting <br /> The section of the riverbank bike path between Valley River Center and Marist High School is in the dark after <br /> thieves stole wire Friday night that supplied power to overhead lights. <br /> Eugene police are seeking the public's help in identifying those who stole the wire and to report any suspicious <br /> activity when they witness it. <br /> The 700 feet of wire that was stolen helped illuminate about a half mile of the East Bank Bicycle Path. <br /> The suspects also damaged seven junction boxes, which had been glued shut with epoxy to prevent theft. The <br /> thieves just pried them out of the ground. Once the boxes were removed, the thieves pulled the copper wire out <br /> of the wire pipe. <br /> The cost to replace the wire and boxes is estimated at $10,000. <br /> Police are asking the public to call 911 when they notice suspicious circumstances such as this because it may <br /> help prevent or lead to the capture of copper -wire thieves. <br /> Clara T Matsler <br /> Parks and Open Space <br /> 541 - 682 - 4908 <br /> 1 <br />
