view USFWS involvement as a key method of improving wildlife management, including
waterfowl, fish, and non -game species.
4. Expanded recreation opportunities, including hunting. Through an expansion of the
existing refuge in this area, USFWS could provide many recreational opportunities for the
benefit of the people in this region. Recent statistics from the other Willamette Valley
refuges indicate that approximately 300,000 people visit the refuge system here annually.
Since this proposal is on the edge of Oregon's second largest metropolitan area, the number
of visitors that could benefit from such an expansion is very high.
We appreciate your time and interest and hope that there may be a way to work together towards
mutual goals in the future. If you would like any information regarding the additional items
mentioned above, please contact our Natural Resource Manager, Scott Duckett, at (541) 682 -4842.
I will be in Washington D.C. the first week of March and would welcome an opportunity to discuss
these matters with you if you are available.
Sincerely,
16
Kitty Piercy
Mayor
Cc: Senator Gordon Smith
Senator Ron Wyden
Congressman Peter DeFazio
Jim Connaughton, Council on Environmental Quality
Kathleen Clarke, Bureau of Land Management
•
