•
3/11/09 e-mail
To: Mike Mottice /ORSO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Cathy Harris /ORSO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Kim
Titus /ORSO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Mark E Johnson /CBFO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Jody
Weil /ORSO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Virginia Grilley /EUFO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, William
Hatton /EUFO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Chuck Fairchild /EUFO /OR/BLM /DOI @BLM, Steven
Shafran/WO /BLM /DOI @BLM, Fred O'Ferrall /ORSO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Maria Thi
Mai /ORSO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM, Maya Fuller /ORSO /OR /BLM /DOI @BLM and Mark Brown.
Good Afternoon All,
I wanted to keep everyone posted as to Mark Brown's and my activities as we have discussions around
the West Eugene Wetlands while developing a sustainable management strategy. Advice on how to
move forward is always welcomed and appreciated.
We are still hoping to have field trip to the WEW for state office staff that are interested in coming to
Eugene, meeting with a couple of the partners and developing a shared understanding and long term
strategy. I understand that the Leadership Team is scheduled to come to Eugene in May. It is my
concern that this is pretty far away, and if we are going to work on this strategy succinctly over the next
few months, we may still want a field visit sooner than later. (Knowing who from the OSO that is
interested in such a visit would be helpful.) Another concern I would have about combining this with the
Leadership Team visit would be to have adequate time to delve into the situation and have a meaningful
conversation. I am afraid it might be rushed if we try to shoe horn it into the already busy agenda for this
May meeting.
West Eugene Wetlands Proposal for a Sustainable Management Strategy
1. January 2009- March 2009- Develop the Sustainable Management Strategy
Last week, March 4, 2009 we met in Portland with:
a. Preston Sleeger, Regional Environmental Officer for the US Department of Interior. Preston
has a long history with the WEW and visits the wetlands when in Eugene. It came to my attention that the
Interior has had a program called "Greening the Interior" Initiative. I called Preston to see if there might
be an opportunity for funding for the WEW Education Center through this Initiative, as we continue to look
for an exist strategy from the Education Center project. Mark Brown and I met with Preston and
discussed with him the project, leaving him with the Background Paper on the WEW project to find a long
term sustainable management strategy.
b. Steven Shafran, lead on Executive Orders regarding diversity. Two projects were submitted
from the WEW for E0 funding, one for Latino Outreach and the other for Native American Outreach.
Steve was in Portland last week to attend the National Planning conference. He indicated that he would
like to meet with me and Karen Wilson of the State Office. He wanted to get further clarification on the
two projects, as well as find out what match the Oregon State office would provide. Essentially these
funding sources would be seed money to help the environmental education program to reach out to
expand audience diversity. We also discussed the shared long term goal of the WEW Education Center
and BLM, to nurture strong relationships in these communities to help youth discover and become
inspired to seek careers in natural resource management.
Next week we are meeting with Forrest Cameron and Doug Spencer of the US Fish and Wildlife Service
to explore US Fish and Wildlife Service interest in a potential role as we develop the Tong term strategy.
A. Create list of BLM stakeholders who should be involved, and /or receive updates (PAO, Recreation,
BLM Washington Office, etc.)
Status Report March 11, 2009
Page 1
