In addition to the <br /> environmentally -safe treatment process, the facility's objectives consist of <br /> educational and artistic elements to promote environmental awareness of the <br /> Santa Monica Urban Watershed. <br /> • <br /> Transportation Department <br /> A transportation department influences the mode in which residents travel around a <br /> municipality (bus, drive, or walk), their travel time and distance. To minimize polluting <br /> airemissions, municipalities should offer convenient access to low- and zero- polluting <br /> forms of transportation. Such forms of transportation include train, tram; bus, bike or <br /> walk ways. Improving accessibility to frequent travel destinations (work, school, stores) <br /> through smart land -use planning will enable residents to accomplish their tasks with • <br /> reduced air emissions. Encourage pedestrian and bike travel by instituting traffic calming • <br /> infrastructure and building bike lanes. Remember that the goal of maximizing efficient <br /> movement of people needs to be coupled with environmental soundness, so that pollution <br /> - is kept at low levels, thereby preserving air and water quality. <br /> In regards to municipal employees, provide incentives for them to use less polluting <br /> forms of transport than driving alone, e.g. offer employee commuter subsidies, coordinate <br /> van and car pools, and provide monetary incentives for those who bike or walk to work. <br /> Engage private businesses in employee commute programs as well • <br /> Examples of policies and programs that promote sustainable transportation include: <br /> • Ann Arbor, MI The Northeast Transportation Plan <br /> This plan is part of a comprehensive plan to increase transportation accessibility <br /> of residents and guide the city's future decisions regarding transportation policy <br /> and infrastructure. <br /> • Boulder, CO Go Boulder <br /> Working with other city departments, GO Boulder provides information and <br /> facilities for all forms of alternative transportation -- from public transit and <br /> • sharing rides, to walking, bicycling, and programs such as flextime and . <br /> telecommuting in order to lessen automobile dependence. <br /> • <br /> • <br />
