LIT% 4ezh'< 1 ` 1 1 I,
LETTERS
DEAL WITH PROBLEMS
It seems a few people in Whiteaker want
to close Scobert Park. They find the public
troublesome and imagine that by closing pub-
lic space they will rid themselves of their trou-
ble. But repression and scapegoating don't
work. If there is poverty and drug use let's
deal with it, let's make some options. There
has been a Community Center planned but
money goes to the police and quick fix ideas.
The few rich are getting richer and the many
poor — poorer. It's foolish to blame the most
poor —the homeless —for the friction that
comes from being on the bottom of the heap.
I'd like to see more money and support for
White Bird, Icky's, Rape Crisis, Sexual
Assault Survivors and Chrysalis [Substance
Abuse Treatment Program]. I'd also like to
see rent control and the minimum wage raised
to $8/hour.
KariJohnson
Eugene
