•
2
I have some of my own questions that I didn't get a chance to ask. Are we as a
community just a little too diverse for the city bureaucracy? Is that why it looks like a
"mess" that the city needs to fix by setting up a city -run Scobert Park advisory board?
Or is the fractious nature of the discussion just a convenient excuse for the city to go
ahead and do whatever it wants to? Is there a budget for repairing and replacing the
fence that has been put up in the park(as I write this letter, the aforementioned fence
has already been taken down, but not by the city)? Can the city really afford this
fence?
The people of Whiteaker have some clear, intelligent thinking on solutions for this
park, Installing public toilets, working towards alternative treatment for addicts, starting
a needle exchange and community presence in various forms are among the actions
we can take that will create positive tong -term change. We know that closing the park
is not the solution. We've seen the drugs, prostitution, and abuse going on year after
year. Even the people who are desperate to see something change know that the
heroin dealers and users will still be doing business in Whiteaker(maybe in the alleys
and back yards instead of in the park). If the people who just want to close the park are
sick and tired of seeing this .activity, I suggest an extended vacation or, for those who
can't afford travel, simply staying in your house with the blinds drawn. Wait, I have a
better idea! Let's take this opportunity to unite and demand cooperation from the city
on our common goal of a safe and beautiful park and neighborhood. Some honest
answers from the rest of Eugene are long overdue and we'll continue to ask for them, if
somewhat impatiently, until we hear a response.
Sincerely,
/ //
, /
Cher ' Reinhart
Resident and Business Owner
adjacent to Scobert Park
cc:Christine Anderson, Dick Morgan, Shawn Boles, Linda Norris, Dave Whitlow, Tom
Brett, Christine Donahue, Register Guard, Eugene Weekly
