Santa Clara Grade School
The Santa Clara Grade School was dedicated in 1931. It was in use until 2002 when it
was closed by the 4J School district. It is located at the intersection of River Road and
Hunsaker Lane. It is a 7.24 acre parcel of land of which 2.08 acres are zoned C -1 and the
balance is zoned P L or Public Land. Citizens have long sought to protect and preserve
this site which many in Santa Clara consider historic. Attached are some comments by
previous citizen groups concerting this building. We feel it should be saved as part of the
areas heritage and could serve as a community center.
"At the time the community changed its name to Santa Clara the school was moved to its
present site. In 1904 this was made into a two -room school building. In 1913 this was
raised and remodeled into a two -story, four -room school building and a high school was
started. This required more room so in 1915 they built a one -room building in the corner
of the grounds for the first three grades. For the last four years the school was so
inadequate that the school used the kitchen of the community hall for a classroom. But
by January 1931, Santa Clara had erected a six -room modern schoolhouse and now has a
standard public school or eight grades and a high school"
S 1
gg h1t1 h } T $°i "t`4, •{ ,s s '
• 'dc'e`,rs F ',1 o 't ' ` '+ a..4 -:. y " a „. .s . „s
{
-1111111 -_
e
