FINANCIAL DATA - BUDGET FOR CONSTRUCTION.AND FUNDRAISING
The capital costs of the Raptor Center were approximately $400,000
as outlined below. In addition to the capital cost, there were
considerable funds spent for planning, including the planning grant for
architect and consultants received from the Institute of Museum Services;
there was staff planning and supervision time, staff time for preparing
the exhibits and interpretive materials; and fundraising costs. All
funds for the actual construction of the Center were raised from
donations from private individuals and foundations. Contributions ranged
from $5 and $10 levels through funds raised by third graders who
auctioned off quilts, to major grants from foundations and individuals.
Funds for each flight habitat were solicited separately and the name of
the donor appears on the structure. Fundraising was done largely through
a committee of the Vermont Institute of Natural Science's Board of
Trustees and took six years.
`' The cost per square foot of the cages was approximately $10,
including materials and labor. Volunteer time can cut costs
considerably, but the time for supervising this must be available within
the organization to make it feasible.
1
Capital Construction Budget for the Vermont Raptor Center
Cage Construction $147,702
Fencing $ 25,000
Roads & Paths $ 23,725
Water & Septic $ 23,287
Infirmary $ 94,597
Landscaping $ 17,500
Interpretive Displays $ 17,254
Equipment & Freezers $ 5,406
Permits & Legal $ 607
Miscellaneous $ 6,104
TOTAL COST $403,182 ,v 161 g
1
65
