familiar to thousands of area children through school visits; the opportunity for the
students to visit the birds - a frequent request - will be a positive addition to the
educational value of seeing them up close in a school setting.
Preservation and identification of flora. In addition, the Native Plant Society has
offered to do signage and site work involving the care and identification of plant
ecies, in exchange for exhibit space and classroom use.
B. Parking and Public Access. A graveled lot designed for Ridgeline Trail parking
exists directly across from the site entrance on Fox Hollow Road.
Passenger Discharge/Loading Area. It is proposed that a small, level area at the base
of the site's driveway be graveled to enable vans and buses to unload and pick -up
students without requiring children to cross Fox Hollow Rd; parking for these
vehicles will be in the lot across the road.
Animal Intake. At the top of the driveway, adjacent to the Care Center, adequate
turn- around and parking room currently exists for citizens bringing injured or
orphaned birds to the Care Center.
On -Site and Handicapped Parking. All on -site parking will be restricted to staff or
handicapped visitors, who will have one designated stall by the Care Center and one
by the Interpretive Center.
Access A graveled walkway will be built following the driveway. The walkway will
incorporate wide, shallow steps and a hand -rail at steeper points, and will be linked
with a network of trails around the display cages. This walkway will allow older
visitors to take their time as well as keep children off the driveway. The Interpretive
Center will be situated half -way up the driveway, in the center of the public area; the
educational enclosures open to public view will primarily be on the lower section of
the property, with some following the western edge of the site, to be built cantilevered
out over the drop -off above the Ridgeline Trail.
C. Interpretive Center /Classroom - The existing garage /shop will be replaced by a •
building approximately three times its size to contain the Interpretive Center, a
classroom /meeting room, a small gift shop, and public restrooms.
Interpretive Center. The Interpretive Center will comprise the major portion of the
new building and will contain educational displays of mounted specimens, skulls,
skeletons, nests, posters, literature on our native species of wildlife, particularly
raptors, and their habitat, and descriptions of the eco- systems and food chains on
which they depend. The center will include some display cages for smaller birds with
viewing access from both inside and outside the building. Exhibit space will also be
available to other environmental organizations.
Classroom. In the classroom, small group presentations can be held with audio - visual
facilities or live birds from the non - releasable population. Examples of suggested -
classroom activities include dissection of owl pellets and examination of a variety of
Cascades Raptor Care Center Proposal 4
