PROPOSAL FOR RAPTOR REHABILITATION /NATURE CENTER <br /> AT 32275 FOX HOLLOW ROAD, RIDGELINE PARK <br /> GOAL To create a nature /interpretive center in conjunction with a wildlife rehabilitation <br /> facility, focused on birds of prey and their habitats <br /> PURPOSE <br /> to relocate the community's raptor rehabilitation facility in order to <br /> A. provide the large flight enclosures required for proper conditioning of birds to be <br /> • returned to the wild. These enclosures will be built to meet national standards and <br /> will be available to rehabilitators regionally for the final stages of rehabilitation, as <br /> there is nothing comparable closer than Denver, Colorado. <br /> B. create a top -notch medical facility, staffed by a qualified and licensed veterinarian <br /> C. provide better training opportunities to volunteers, student interns, and community <br /> service workers; <br /> D. establish a more tangible community presence to enhance public education efforts, <br /> fund- raising, and the prevention of human- induced wildlife injuries. <br /> II. to provide on -site educational opportunities to the public through <br /> A. display of permanently - disabled /non - releasable birds in habitat -type enclosures, in <br /> order to <br /> 1. familiarize viewers with the habitat requirements of different species of birds <br /> found in our area, as well as what kinds of problems these birds encounter, <br /> why they can need care in a rehabilitation facility, and how to prevent the <br /> human- induced problems which cause the majority of injuries; and <br /> 2. provide the birds with appropriate and adequate space, choice of perching <br /> locations, and privacy, both from each other and from the public when <br /> desired. <br /> B. field trips and projects for scout troops, schools, and other groups, for nature <br /> experiences which are interactive without being invasive, and thus to encourage a <br /> sense of connection with the natural world and a sense of responsibility and steward- <br /> ship towards it. Possible projects include: <br /> - studying the plant and animal life of a meadow or woodland <br /> - planting a hummingbird or butterfly - attracting garden <br /> building bird or squirrel nest boxes and studying their use <br /> - building a blind and utilizing it to study a fruiting tree or shrub and the <br /> wildlife it attracts through the seasons <br /> studying and identifying animal tracks in mud and making plaster casts <br /> Cascades Raptor Care Center Proposal 1 <br />
