All of you are aware of recent investigations and resulting disciplinary actions taken within the
division due to instances of inappropriate workplace behavior. It is disappointing that this type
of behavior continues within the division even with the efforts and training which division staff
have received on the subject.
It is critical for each of us as supervisors and managers to clearly understand the divisions work
place behavior expectations and to show our support for these expectations through our own
actions. Further it is required of each of us to monitor and correct the inappropriate actions or
behaviors of staff we supervise or encounter through appropriate coaching or when necessary
appropriate disciplinary action.
The attached memo reiterating workplace behavior expectations will soon be sent to all
Maintenance Division Employees. This memo and the expectations defined within are
essentially the same as those communicated in a memo four years ago by then Maintenance
Director, Bob Hammitt. While these expectations should not be anything new to us we each
should take the time to ensure we are intimately familiar with each.
The expectations for the managers and supervisors within the division go beyond that expected
of the line employees. Each of us are to be held responsible for the following:
♦ We must understand and be able to explain the City's anti - harassment policy. In
addition, we must be able to describe appropriate workplace behavior and be able
to identify and inappropriate behavior we see. We must be open and willing to
discuss questions and concerns about appropriate behaviors raised by those
employees we supervise.
• We must model appropriate behaviors at all times. We are to treat each individual
in this organization with respect, dignity and without preference. Inappropriate
favoritism will not be tolerated by or from any of us.
• We must monitor and observe the work environment around us on an ongoing
basis and ensure that inappropriate behaviors or activities are not occurring. Each z
of us must clearly articulate the City's anti - harassment policy and workplace
behavior expectations to our lead workers and explain their responsibility to help
you, their supervisor, monitor the work environment.
• It is expected that we will each hold ourselves accountable for our own behavior
and to hold those who report to us accountable for theirs. If we observe
inappropriate behavior, it is expected that we will promptly intervene and take
appropriate action.
