INT E R
O F F I C E MEMO
To: All Maintenance Division Employees
From: Bob Hammitt, Maintenance Director
Subject: Workplace Behavior Expectations
Date: October 15, 1996
Recently, a few situations have come to my attention causing me concern about Maintenance
Division employees' understanding expectations for behavior in the workplace. I would like to
clarify those expectations for you. If you have any questions or confusion about them, please let
your supervisor, section manager, or me know.
Every employee in this division is responsible for creating an environment that is respectful and
supportive for all employees. This can only happen if each one of us understands and is sensitive
to the perspective of others. We must all think about what we say and do and refrain from
making any comments or taking any action that might be derogatory or demeaning to someone.
Any comments, jokes, printed materials, or actions that reference or generalize someone's
background, gender, religion, physical characteristics, sexual orientation, or other inherent
qualities are not acceptable and must be avoided in the workplace. Thi holds
others regardless ted in
whether someone does not appear to object. It also applies to
the course of your work, as well as all City employees.
Behavior and comments do impact people's comfort at the workplace, enjoyment of work,
productivity, and success on the job. Treating people with dignity and respect goes beyond a
legal and policy issue; it is a clear value of the organization. Each of us must be accountable for
our behavior. It is my expectation that we all take some responsibility for more than our own
behavior, but also stand up for others. If you hear or see something happen that you think may
be offensive or hurtful to someone or that you are uncomfortable with, please bring it to the
attention of the person who said or did it, to your supervisor, section manager, or me. Our work
environment will improve only if we each take accountability primarily for our own behavior but
also, to some degree, the behavior of our co- workers.
All of you have received a copy of the City's anti- harassment policy. Please be aware that I and
other managers of this organization take this policy very seriously. Any behaviors in the,
workplace that violate it will not be tolerated. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if
there are violations. I will seek the highest level of disciplinary action for the particular incident,
including termination.
I recognize that the workplace and the expectations for behavior have changed since some of you
