I MEMORANDUM
To: (unit) Employees
From: XXXX XXXXXX, Crew Supervisor
Subject: Work Behavior Expectations
Date: December 4, 2000
Every employee in this division is responsible for creating an environment that is respectful and
supportive for all employees. This can only happen if each one of us understands and is sensitive
to the perspectives of others. We must all think about what we say and do and refrain from
making any comments or taking any actions that might be derogatory, demeaning or mean
spirited to someone. Any comments, jokes, printed materials, or actions that reference or
generalize someone's specific background, gender, religion, physical characteristics, sexual
orientation or other inherent qualities is not acceptable and must be avoided in the workplace.
This holds true regardless of whether someone does not appear to object. It also applies to
customers and others contacted in the course of your work, as well as all City employees.
Behavior, actions and comments do impact people's comfort at the workplace, enjoyment of
work, productivity, and success on the job. Treating people with dignity and respect goes beyond
a legal and policy issue; it is a clear value of mine and of the organization. Each of us must be
accountable for our behavior. It is my expectation that we all take some responsibility for more
than our own behavior, but also stand up for others. If you hear or see something happen that
you think may be offensive or hurtful to someone or that you are uncomfortable with, please
bring it to the attention of the person who said or did it, to me, our section manager, or the
Maintenance Division Director. Our work environment will improve only if we each take
responsibility primarily for our own behavior but also, to some degree, the behavior of our co-
workers.
All of you have received a copy of the City's anti - harassment policy, either at new employee
orientation shortly after you were hired or when it's distributed each year by the City Manager.
Please be aware that I and all other supervisors and managers of this organization take this policy
very seriously. Any behaviors in the work place that violate the policy will not be tolerated.
Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if there are violations. I will seek the highest level
of disciplinary action for the particular incident, including termination.
I understand this can be a difficult subject to discuss with me or with your co- workers. Some
employees may feel hesitant to bring forth a concern because they may have engaged in
inappropriate behaviors or activities at some point in the past. We will only see real change
when people stand up for what is right, and accept responsibility for their actions. Being a
passive observer to inappropriate activities with no action or follow through to stop or correct it,
