Why Are These Pollutants a Problem?
TSS - Carries other pollutants with it.
Blankets channel bottoms hence reducing fish
habitat and channel capacities.
Can cause increases in water temperatures.
Nutrients- Excess nutrients may cause nuisance algal blooms
which depletes oxygen levels.
Nutrients from decaying vegetation also deplete
oxygen levels.
When oxygen levels are low, more metals are
released from sediments.
Metals- Toxic to aquatic life.
Bacteria- Indicates possible presences of human pathogens.
Organics- Toxic and sometimes carcinogenic to aquatic life.
Temperature- High water temperatures reduce oxygen levels by
accelerating biodegradation levels.
High water temperatures also reduce fish habitat
for certain species.
